Used Books Day
Friday, my wife had to be dropped off in Easley. I decided to go the extra distance and make a run to Mr. K’s Used Books. Supporting such a trek was the fact that my wife had set aside a box of books to trade in, while cleaning out her office. Turns out that most of the books were not accepted as trade-in. But, with the little bit I had made, I was able to pick out a couple interesting items: Introduction to the Theory of Relativity by Peter Gabriel Bergmann Der Spieler und andere Romane (Dostoyevski, in German!) Medieval and Modern Greek by Robert Browning (ooooooh) And the opportunity…

In The Mail: Social Sciences, Mathematics and Fiction
So, this is likely the last of the new books for a while, considering the holidays are over, and I don’t know of any more on the way. These came before the weekend, but I’ve been fairly busy…

Indian Wednesday
That is, food. My wife is not the biggest fan of lamb, but my daughter likes it much as I do1. Since my daughter was left home with me over this past weekend2, I had intended to make us something with lamb. Even got it from the local Publix. However, Jenna kept on going out and doing teenager-y things, and it just didn’t happen. However, that meant I still have lamb. And, well, it wants to be eaten! And in respect of my wife, I chose two dishes to make for dinner, one lamb and one chicken. Those choices? Aloo gosht (Delhi-style lamb cooked with potatoes) and Murgh aur masoor…

In The Mail: Spoken Uyghur
I’ve been drooling over this book for a while. Time to remove it from my wish list! It is aesthetically quite fetching, I think. Pretty reds and oranges, crisp paper. An interesting amount of extra white space at the bottom of each page, though.

Library Outing
After reviewing my local university’s library website, I found that at least one of the books I earlier posted about was available. Helpfully, I am an alumnus, and so can borrow books pretty easily. Thirty minute trip later – parking is a pain, though traffic is light right now – I had Linguistics: An Introduction to Language and Communication in hand. Unfortunately, it is a much older edition (1979). Turns out even the edition cited in L&BE (6th, 2010) has been superceded. The size difference is immense, also, with the edition I borrowed having 357 pages, and that of the latest (7th, 2017) edition being 608 pages. At a whopping…

Books in the Mail
Last November, Mike Aubrey over at Koine-Greek.com posted about a fairly glowing review of Linguistics & Biblical Exegesis. I’ve always found Aubrey to be a good writer, and an excellent thinker, even if my knowledge of him is limited to blogs about grammar, Greek linguistics and mead-making. Christmas Eve I ordered it, and received it today when I got my saved mail. I’m incredibly excited to get into it! I may have picked up another book on linguistics, Linguistics and the Formal Sciences, at the same time. Looks to be more of a “how we got here”. But I’m okay with that, really. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Help a…

Dessert for New Year’s Eve
Went to the grocery store, buying potatoes and sparkling grape juice to round out beef stew and New Year’s Eve festivities, respectively, and saw pears. That means… Poached Pears. The possibilities are maybe not endless, but certainly numerous. I went for a cinnamon, clove and vermouth poach this time. This I topped with an orange whip cream.

Shark Teeth
Yesterday, I mentioned that I didn’t have a picture of the shark teeth we collected. Here, I wish to remedy that. Also, I am told to inform you, noble reader, that my wife is an excellent finder of said teeth. In all reality, she is indeed an excellent finder of said teeth.

Englewood, FL
I tried to make a certain change to the site itself last week, and ended up killing reading of posts and pages altogether. Thus ensued a painful process of restoring the expected functionality. Now completed, I thought I’d share some photos from a sunset beach excursion from last week. Enjoy! And Sean had a little bit of fun that I was able to capture. Listen to the soft crash of the waves. So peaceful.
